FREEDOM
As Nelson Mandela began to be more and more recognized world-wide for his efforts against the apartheid while in prison, a significant and traumatic event occured on June 16th,1976 known as the Soweto Uprising. In Soweto, South Africa an estimated 2,000 high school students led protests against the required Afrikaans teachings outside of a local school, and police forces swiftly responded in large numbers, opening fire and killing an unknown but vast amount of students ranging from 200-700. This was seen to be the downfall of the apartheid system and in 1980 Oliver Tambo called upon a "Free Mandela" campaign along with thousands of other supporters. On February 11th, 1990 F.W. de Klerk, former South African president, released Nelson Mandela and lifted the ban on the ANC in order to heal the wounds inflicted by the apartheid. Mandela was shortly after elected as deputy president of the ANC and both him and de Klerk recieved the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for their efforts
