Birth of Apartheid
Long before the apartheid party came into power, racial segregation was very much prevalent in the early 1900's
and tensions rose after the implementation of the 1913 Land Act. What this did was force the black population to live
in reserves and made sharecroppers illegal putting a lot of blacks out of work. In response to the Land Act, the opposition
created the African National Congress in hopes of overturning this act. In 1948 after the economic distraught caused
by WWII the Afrikaner National Party won the elections under the message "APARTHEID' which meant "separateness." From
that moment forth the apartheid would try to diminish the minority populations socially, economically, and politically
taking any measures needed.
